Rhuthun or Rhudd Din (red Fort) suggests a pre Roman settlement built on the sandstone of the area.
The castle and town walls were built by Reginald de Grey in 1282 following Edward I ‘s conquest of Wales. Ruthin was raized in 1400 during the revolt of Owen Glyndwr
The Library (old record house) built 1785 the portico front with Doric columns were added in 1860’s, was the magistrates court until 1986.
Ruthin castle, completed in 1284, survived the Owen Glyndwr revolt of 1400, parliamentary forces destroyed the building in 1644 during the Civil war. A hotel was built on the site in 1826.
Nantclwyd y Dre C1435, cruck built from a tree felled in 1434 ! a fine example of timbered construction.
The Old Courthouse, now a bank (the banks do have some superb buildings in Ruthin) c1421 in place some 18 years after Owen Glyndwr’s failed attempt to take Ruthin in 1400. Box frame construction, with dungeons below.
Ruthin Gaol, ceased being a prison in 1916, recently restored and worth a visit now it is open to the public.
Ruthin Craft Centre, recently refurbished, with artisans individual workshop / galleries and 2 art galleries plus café, another place worthy of a visit.
Ruthin has many small churches with interesting stories and artefacts, along with individual houses that also have stories to tell.
